Background: 

DO & CO is known worldwide as “The Gourmet Entertainment Group.” Originating in Austria, DO & CO is involved in airline catering, event catering, restaurants, hotels and airport lounges. Employing over 6,000 employees worldwide, DO & CO caters for renowned guests at the highest level. DO & CO has twenty-five total gourmet kitchens spanning eight countries on three continents, and is always expanding. DO & CO currently has two U.S.-based gourmet kitchens, one in New York near JFK Airport and the other just outside of Chicago, IL. The Chicago facility is located in Des Plaines, minutes away from Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport. The facility covers 112,065 square feet and consists of a production area, storage space, office space as well as a dock staging area.

Challenge: 

Pentegra Systems submitted a proposal responding to a RFP sent out by DO & CO. The objective was to design, engineer and install several integrated technologies into DO&CO’s new state-of-the-art facility. However, a glaring issue that stood in the way of this project’s completion was the extremely short timeframe Pentegra had to work with. At the time, DO & CO had signed a contract with Emirate Airlines, an airline company that had just taken over a gate at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport. Emirate had already booked all of its flights out of that gate, but couldn’t proceed further until the food services was approved on their airplanes. Pentegra Systems had to complete all aspects of this project in less than half the amount of time it would normally take in order for Emirate Airlines, as well as all of DO & CO’s other clients, to get the food services needed for their respective flights.. As Pentegra designed and installed several integrated solutions throughout the new facility, interim kitchens had to be setup in the parking lot of the new facility to continue pushing out product while the new building was being still completed.

 

Solution:

Pentegra Systems’ proposal consisted of a multi-discipline solution. The AV portion of the project included a giant 80” flat panel display inside DO&CO’s new boardroom. This Sharp AQUOS monitor can be used to display presentations as well as be used for both audio and video conferencing for important meetings. This display gives DO&CO’s boardroom all the essential capabilities a modern boardroom needs. In DO&CO’s lobby area, Pentegra installed a 46’ monitor for digital signage purposes as well as displaying custom presentations to customers and clients. DO&CO’s dispatch office was also retrofitted with large 42” monitors that monitor any custom programming. In the kitchens at DO&CO, Pentegra installed ceiling mounted 32” monitors. These monitors display the information the chefs need to know to prepare orders. Wherever in the world a plane needs food service to, these displays will let the kitchen crews know exactly what needs to be prepared and when it’s needed by. These displays can be changed in real time to make the cooking and preparing processes extremely efficient. Rounding out the AV portion of this project is the installation of the paging system. All internal facility communication is done with the new building-wide paging system. Paging gives all departments at DO&CO a quick and easy way of communicating with one another during standard daily operations.

Being a part of the airline industry, security is a critical aspect of DO&CO’s operation. Pentegra Systems had to design a system befitting to an organization with such high security standards. A video surveillance system utilizing Avigilon security cameras was installed both inside and outside DO&CO’s new facility to monitor happenings. In addition to a video surveillance system, Pentegra installed an access control system to control entryways throughout the facility. This S2 access control system utilizes bio-metrics, where in order to access a certain area of the facility; personnel would have to use their fingerprint to gain entry. Compared to the usual access card method, bio-metrics adds an extra level of security to DO&CO’s already high security level operation. Aside from access control on the doors of the facility, Pentegra also installed the lock and automation system of the gate for traffic to gain access both into and out of DO&CO. Video Surveillance and Access Control are the two most essential aspects to protect the facility as a whole, but some of the products that DO&CO carries require a little more protection. There are several caged areas inside the warehouse containing valuable products such as high-end liquors. Pentegra Systems created a solution to secure these cages with magnetic locking gates where only authorized personnel could access them.

Results: 

DO&CO Catering needed a multi-discipline integrated system and in an extremely small time frame. Pentegra Systems stepped up to the plate and accepted these challenges. Not only did Pentegra’s professional engineering team create a solution that satisfied all of their technology needs, but we implemented that solution in half the time it would normally take. This project at DO&CO is a prime example of Pentegra Systems’ abilities to engineer, install and maintain a multi-discipline integrated system within a small time frame.

Background:

Unity Church was founded in 1871 in Oak Park, IL. In 1905, a lightning strike started a fire which destroyed the wood-framed church. A young architect named Frank Lloyd Wright was then brought in to design the new Unity Temple. Wright was living in Oak Park at the time and also came from a family of Unitarians. The Temple was completed in 1908 and is considered by many architects to be the first modern building in the world.

Challenge:

Pentegra Systems collaborated with Talaske Consultants to install an audiovisual, security and data network design build solution. Given the aging nature of Unity Temple and the timeless historical aesthetic of the facility, the newly installed technology had to be as inconspicuous as possible. The challenge was to enhance the technology in and around this building to give it all the modern day functionality of a fully integrated, multi-discipline system. This all had to be done without sacrificing the classic motif and overall look of both the interior and exterior of Unity Temple.

Solution:

Pentegra Systems installed an extensive audiovisual solution for Unity Temple. Spaces such as houses of worship need the proper technology when presenting to audiences of varying sizes. The congregation needs to be able to see and hear what is going at all times and this can be accomplished with the appropriate technologies. At the heart of the audio portion of this A/V installation is a state of the art digital mixing system. This mixing system controls and manages all of the sound from within the temple. Pentegra installed a microphone system and mechanically steerable ultra compact line array speakers using equipment that could easily be hidden or concealed to maintain the overall aesthetics of the temple. With this improved sound system, everyone within the temple can hear the preacher and the music clearly. On the video side of this project, a projection system was installed. A top of the line digital laser projector was installed on the north end of the temple with a projection screen. This projection system is used to display the feed captured by the multi-purpose HD network camera to record the sermon to make it easier for all in attendance to watch. This projection system has full video playback and recording capabilities. The projector can present various images, presentations, videos, etc. simply and easily.

Security is a top priority when it comes to historical landmarks such as the Unity Temple. Pentegra’s security solution included intrusion detection, access control, digital video surveillance and audio video intercom. The intrusion detection system includes motion detectors and door contacts that signal an alarm if triggered during off hours or whenever the system is activated. This alarm system is monitored 24/7 via internet connection and is easily controlled and managed through user-friendly wall mounted touch screen keypads. A card access control system was installed to manage access to specific areas of the temple. This expandable system maintains a continuous activity log to keep track of what doors are opened, when they are opened and by whom. Pentegra integrated this system with the intrusion detection for convenience. For example, when a designated user’s card is swiped, it can deactivate the intrusion detection to prevent unnecessary false alarms. Select electronic door locks installed with the access control are also integrated with an audio video intercom system that helps determine whether an outsider can be let into Unity Temple. A visitor can communicate via the intercom function while the camera transmits a live image of the visitor to the inside monitor. This intercom door station can be unlocked easily by the master station inside Unity Temple or any IP telephone on demand. To monitor activity inside and outside Unity Temple, IP surveillance cameras were installed. These IP dome cameras keep extra eyes on the grounds internally and externally for potential vandalism and crime. The Network Video Recorder installed also has a DVD recorder to provide evidence for potential incidents. The NVR can be accessed from any computer or mobile device connected to the internet. These three systems were all integrated using the same security management software into one easily manageable and efficient security solution that will help make Unity Temple a safe house of worship for many years to come.

The third aspect of this integrated installation was via Pentegra’s data division. To stay connected in today’s world you need a strong network and of course you need Wi-Fi. Pentegra Systems implemented a network infrastructure within Unity Temple to bring this historic landmark into modern times. Wi-Fi Access Points and hardwired data ports were installed throughout the temple. This equipment and all Ethernet cabling was strategically positioned and executed balancing premium functionality with inconspicuousness. Unity Temple personnel and visitors alike can now access the world effortlessly via Pentegra’s network infrastructure and always stay connected while within the temple.

Results:

Pentegra Systems successfully installed a multi-discipline integrated solution consisting of audio, video, data and security technologies that bring the aging Unity Temple into modern technological times. These integrated solutions help improve the everyday operations and safety of this historic facility without sacrificing any of its timeless look both inside and out. Background:

GEMS Education is an international education company that has been educating youths since 1959. GEMS has schools in Europe, Africa, Asia and the Middle East and in 2014 GEMS opened their first school in the United States. GEMS World Academy Chicago educates students from Junior Kindergarten to the 12th grade. GEMS’ Chicago location will be split into two schools to house all grades. The first facility, which holds students from Junior Kindergarten to 5th grade, opened Fall 2014 and the second facility will begin construction to open in the near future. This 9 story building in the heart of Chicago’s Lake Shore East neighborhood places students in a prime location surrounded by beautiful parks, museums and government buildings. GEMS World Academy Chicago is an 82,000 square foot building housing classrooms, offices, a library, conference rooms, a robotics lab, cafeteria, indoor gymnasium and a rooftop playground.

Challenge:

Pentegra Systems initially was solicited to respond to an RFQ by GEMS World Academy. This unique project was not based on a hard consultant specification, but overall design criteria with the objective of giving the client the best solution to meet their needs. The goal of this AV system was to provide a state of the art education experience for all students attending that included all modern day technologies to further enhance the world class education that GEMS has become known for. The design team, composed of our expert engineers, designed and proposed a truly remarkable solution that met all of GEMS’ expectations. Working closely with GEMS, Erik Geiger of Shen Milsom Wilke, as well as Power Construction, Pentegra Systems set out to implement a system that could not only enhance the learning experience for all students through the interconnection of all classrooms within the facility, but connect all classrooms in the facility to any other GEMS classroom around the globe.

Solution:

In order for GEMS World Academy Chicago to become a virtual portal to classrooms around the world, Pentegra Systems had to introduce cutting-edge technology able to handle such a task. Inside every classroom within GEMS’ Downtown Chicago location are two flat panel touch displays. One of these displays is dedicated towards instruction from the teacher using it for both presentations and demonstrations among other aspects of the everyday lesson plan. The other flat panel touch display in every classroom is used for student interactivity. These monitors are used for students to create projects, present class work, etc. All classroom flat panel displays have the capability to function as a digital dry erase board to easily edit and erase during class. Students can come up to the touch panels and participate in the curriculum whether it be completing a long division math problem on the digital dry erase board or going online to research the first World War for an upcoming presentation in class. The most prominent use for these touch panels is to act as a virtual doorway to other classrooms within the building, as well around the globe to other GEMS schools through video conferencing capabilities. A student inside the science room in Chicago can connect and collaborate with a student in Dubai conducting the same experiment seamlessly in real time.

The system Pentegra designed and installed also equipped the corridors with the very same touch panel displays. These monitors have several uses, including signage capabilities. The touch panels display important school information and content to both faculty and staff walking through the hallways on every floor. Staying in the realm of digital signage, these displays also become a virtual directory to passing students, teachers and visitors. They can display what rooms are located on every floor and provide direction to those rooms as well as where personnel are located. Creston control systems are used for students to easily access the touch panel displays in the hallways, temporarily disabling the digital signage. Using the tablets in the corridors, students can mirror any smartphone, computer or tablet onto the flat panel displays to share and collaborate with other students instantly converting the space into a huddle room of sorts. Once students are done using the touch panels in the hallway, the Creston control system automatically converts the display back into digital signage.

Every display possesses the same features so they all can become an impromptu learning area no matter the location inside GEMS World Academy. Being an educational institution, having every display capable of transforming any public area into a hub for learning was a very appealing aspect of Pentegra Systems’ solution. Content sharing is a significant aspect of this AV system. All touch panels have wireless desktop mirroring capabilities. Any user can wirelessly mirror their device’s display, Windows or Mac, straight onto any display inside the facility for easy sharing. Students and faculty can also easily share content from the corridor displays into any classroom display as well. Any content from any display can be sent down to the lobby and reception area which houses two flat panel displays of their own as well as a video wall consisting of four monitors. These displays within the lobby are entryways into the entire facility. In addition to their digital signage capabilities, parents contemplating enrolling their child in GEMS World Academy Chicago can sit in on any class going on at that moment through the video conferencing capabilities and get a good feel for what an average day is like at GEMS. In addition to the communication possibilities of the flat panel displays, Pentegra Systems also installed a building-wide paging system to seamlessly communicate from every room in the facility. The final piece of the AV system that we installed at GEMS World Academy is the sound system and projector inside the multipurpose room. This multipurpose room is initially GEMS’ gymnasium, but equipped with an overhead video projector. This enables the gymnasium to act as a theater, assembly hall or for any public gathering purpose. The sound systems in both the multi-purpose room as well as the cafeteria are controlled by Crestron, much like the touch panel displays in the corridors of GEMS.

Results:

Pentegra Systems created a system that elevates classroom interactivity to a global scale. With the possibilities that come with modern day technologies such as flat screen touch panels and video conferencing solutions, “sharing” in the classroom now goes further beyond just the classroom walls of GEMS World Academy Chicago. GEMS’ new state-of-the-art AV system enables communication and the transferring of information from room to room, floor to floor as well as country to country. Having worked closely with GEMS World Academy, Pentegra Systems created a revolutionary AV system that facilitates an already tech savvy generation of students and faculty. GEMS had a vision and Pentegra’s expertise made that vision a reality and will continue to ensure that vision continues to enhance children’s learning experiences for many years to come.

Background:

The Chicago Teachers Union represents nearly 30,000 teachers and personnel of the Chicago Public Schools system and has been doing so for more than 75 years. In 2014, CTU announced that it would be moving their offices from the Merchandise Mart to a newly renovated three-story, 70,000 square foot facility in the heart of the city’s West Side.

Challenge:

Pentegra Systems, working closely with Threshold Acoustics, provided a solution to introduce and implement technologies that Chicago Teachers Union did not have previously in their former headquarters. This specification included technologies that enhanced everyday operations, collaboration, leisure, interactivity and future events within the facility. The goal of this project was to provide a state of the art audiovisual system for all in-house Chicago Teachers Union staff as well as visitors to the new headquarters. In order to accomplish this, Pentegra Systems worked with Threshold Acoustics to create a robust network that was capable of withstanding all of the video traffic from the several encoders in this complex audiovisual system.

Solution:

When you enter Chicago Teachers Union’s new facility on the West Side, you walk right into the lobby area and Pentegra’s AV installation immediately stands out. Inside the lobby you will see a large 70” wall mounted display. This display can be used for digital signage as well as displaying any content from any device using the various connections on the AV wall plates. Every aspect of this display is controlled via a wall mounted touch screen. The lobby is quite spacious and can hold a fair amount of personnel. The most important function of the lobby area is to hold impromptu press conferences. In the designated press conference area, there are floor pockets featuring inputs for microphones, as well as AV wall plates with audio feeds available to members of the press. The ceiling is fitted with a ceiling mounted speaker system as well as wireless microphones to easily facilitate any press conference instantly.

As you begin to make your way past the lobby you will venture into a large assembly hall. This is a multipurpose space and can hold any event CTU hosts.  It is a venue with high ceilings and if you look closely you will see Pentegra’s presentation system.  In the ceiling there are two dual-lamp digital projectors.  Those projectors display content onto the two motorized 189” diagonal projection screens that are located just above the stage.  Each projector has the ability to show its own image so you can have two different projections on the screens at once.  This presentation system is also controlled via a wall mounted touch screen control system.  Located on the north side of the assembly hall are two HD indoor PTZ cameras.  These cameras can capture any happenings going on inside the assembly hall and can directly send that video to the overhead projectors, perfect for the audience to see presenters giving a speech or any other happenings on the stage.  Around the ceiling projectors you will also see ceiling speakers that provide all the sounds necessary to facilitate any event CTU may hold.  The audio is controlled by a mixer that can be totally controlled via an iPad.  AV wall plates are also located in the assembly hall complete with microphone inputs and speaker outputs as well as AV data jacks to show content on the projector via external devices.

Pentegra also installed presentation systems in various conference rooms as well as classrooms throughout the Chicago Teachers Union headquarters. The majority of these conference rooms are equipped with 70” interactive flat panel displays. These displays take conferencing to the next level whether it is meeting with colleagues in the same room or anywhere around the world. These displays come equipped with video conferencing abilities complete with built in cameras making distance a nonfactor when it comes to meetings. These interactive displays are also digital whiteboards. You can create and annotate with the greatest of ease using this technology. These displays are all easily controlled via the tabletop touch screen control panels. There is also a pop-up module at the center of all conference tables that contains both power and interactivity connections. This allows the user to hook up a device such as a laptop and transmit that display onto the wall mounted 70” inch display for convenience. In the rooms that do not contain these displays, Pentegra installed one or multiple short throw projectors. These projectors are all also controlled via wall mounted touch screen and project onto wall mounted motorized projection screens. These are perfect for displaying content such as presentations, videos or any content necessary in a conference room or classroom setting. The audio is supported via either ceiling mounted speakers or in the case of the rooms with interactive displays, a sound bar located right below the flat panel.

One of the major highlights of this project is the third floor boardroom.  The most important meetings need top-of-the-line equipment that is also easy to use and Pentegra Systems delivered such a solution.  This boardroom consists of an 84” flat panel display equipped with a camera right below it pointing towards the boardroom table to get a perfect view of all board members for videoconferencing capabilities.  On the boardroom table sit unique tabletop small disc-shaped wired microphones.  These mics are easily operable with LED lights, green meaning the mic is live and red meaning the mic is offline.  All aspects of this system can be controlled either from the wall mounted touch panel or the tabletop mini touch screen.

Results:

Pentegra Systems created a system that brings Chicago Teachers Union into the 21st Century of audiovisual capabilities.  In the world of education, collaboration is key and this system provides countless possibilities to collaborate and improve not only education, but also business.  Although they are teachers, even teachers never stop learning and this system facilitates further learning opportunities with a wide range of collaboration and meeting spaces highlighted by the audiovisual technologies Pentegra Systems installed.  Pentegra Systems saw the vision that Chicago Teachers Union had for their brand new facility and professionally engineered and executed this installation to make their vision become a reality.

Background:

Founded in 1947, Golden State Foods has become one of the largest diversified suppliers to the foodservice industry. In 2014, Golden State Foods opened a new regional headquarters and logistics center in McCook, Illinois, relocating from locations in Lemont and Bolingbrook. This new 152,670 square foot facility is in a well positioned transportation corridor within the west suburbs of Chicago. The new location includes a 17,550 square foot office, a 135,120 square foot warehouse and 52 truck docks as well as a separate on-site maintenance building. Golden State Foods serves over 25,000 restaurants spanning 3 continents. Specializing in the processing and distribution of liquid products, meat products, produce and dairy, Golden State Foods also serves as full-line distribution to the quick service restaurant industry. Golden State Foods’ customers include McDonald’s, Chick-Fil-A, Starbucks, Nestle, Arby’s and Taco Bell.

Challenge:

Pentegra Systems was challenged on the design side to create a complete design build integrated low-voltage system to satisfy all the needs of Golden State Foods. We met with GSF personnel across the nation to identify and ensure all necessary needs were going to be met. Pentegra collaborated with the architects of this project, going back and making changes to the initial plans to ensure this design build would seamlessly be incorporated into the facility. Through this teamwork, the ultimate goal was for this brand new facility to become the Regional Headquarters and Logistics Center for Golden State Foods.

Solution:

Pentegra Systems and Golden State Foods wanted to make an impression with employees and visitors from the start, from the moment they set foot in the high end lobby area. We designed and installed an impressive customizable 4 flat panel display video wall to show off the latest and greatest Golden State Foods news, information and content. To enhance the experience of GSF employees throughout the entirety facility, we installed flat panel monitors in the boardroom, meeting rooms, break room and several offices. These fully customizable flat panels deliver important company information, display presentations as well as act as a source for digital signage. All displays are incredibly user friendly touch panels with iPad controls. Pentegra also supplied Golden State Foods’ Customer Experience Center with flat panel displays thus making it a fully interactive area to present, demonstrate and entertain their high profile clientele.

To facilitate the safety and security of this modern day facility, Pentegra Systems needed to design and install a fully integrated security system. We started by collaborating with Golden State Foods on the locations where video surveillance was an absolute necessity. The outcome was the installation of 90 Avigilon IP Security Cameras. With these cameras, GSF can monitor all activities within their facility, office and warehouse areas as well as the entire perimeter of the premises. This surveillance system was integrated with an RS2 Access Control System. Installed on 30 doors, Golden State can grant and restrict access to employees, vendors and suppliers with the greatest of ease. To effectively manage visitors, an EasyLobby system was installed printing badges for visiting personnel and is active for that day until the contents of that badge fade rendering it invalid from that point forward. The authorized access of personnel is crucial, but the authorized access of incoming vehicles to a transportation hub such as GSF is as well. Golden State Foods’ incoming semi-trucks now use the newly installed video intercom system to communicate to the front office to gain entry, opening the swing gates to gain access into Golden State Foods.

As part of this design build project, Pentegra Systems installed the main distribution frame (MDF) for the communications infrastructure. The backbone data cabling of this project consisted of fiber-optic cabling to 3 intermediate distribution frame deposits. These IDFs were strategically located through the facility to ensure every area of the facility was connected. Pentegra Systems was also in constant communication with the corresponding utility companies to ensure the proper utility feeds were being brought in to supply power. We ran all voice and data cabling throughout the entire facility to establish constant connection and ensure quality incoming and outgoing communication functionality. Through the completion of this project, Pentegra Systems delivered top-of-the-line technology befitting a modern day company headquarters such as Golden State Foods.

Results:

Pentegra Systems combined a brand new cutting-edge facility with state of the art technology. This project brought to fruition an audio visual system that enhances both the employee and visitor experience. Golden State Foods’ new data system connects all personnel to one another as well as enabling communication possibilities to anywhere that their business takes them. The video surveillance effectively monitors the mammoth facility while the access control system ensures a secure facility with only authorized personnel and transport. The unrivaled expertise of Pentegra Systems will ensure the professional maintenance and assistance for all of Golden State Foods’ integrated systems to ensure and continue the best quality and fulfill their greatest potential.

Background:

In 1893, The Art Institute moved to its present location at 111 South Michigan Avenue, adorned with its two bronze lions famously guarding the west entrance. Since then, the museum has undergone extensive additions and renovations, the most extensive being the new Modern Wing addition. At 264,000 square feet, the Modern Wing increased the size of The Art Institute by 33% to approximately one million square feet, making it the second largest art museum in the United States.

Challenge:

The Art Institute of Chicago wanted their Modern Wing to employ the latest in audio visual technology in its lobby, meeting facilities and educational center. Chicago-area technology consulting firm, Talaske was brought onto the project for their prowess in acoustic, audio and video consulting. Talaske then turned to systems integration firm Pentegra Systems, to integrate, install and test the new technology systems; Pentegra is an expert in convergence of these AV technologies and we are known in the industry for our attention to detail which are imperative elements to successfully complete such a high profile project.

Solution:

Pentegra Systems was responsible for the integration of AV systems throughout The Art Institute’s Modern Wing. The Ryan Education Center, The Kenneth and Anne Griffin Court, The Alexandra and John Nichols Board of Trustees Suite, and The Howard and Donna Stone Gallery all required state-of-the-art AV systems for multimedia presentations, signage, telepresence and sound reinforcement.
The Ryan Education Center is comprised of five classrooms, three studios, an educator resource center and a family orientation center, all totaling to 20,000 square feet. The classrooms are equipped with versatile AV systems, including wall-mounted 65” plasma displays, sound reinforcement and wireless microphone systems controlled by wall-mounted touch panels. Each classroom is also equipped with a hearing impaired audio system which consists of ceiling microphones using infrared transmitters to provide sound to personal headsets worn by hearing impaired individuals. The studios feature sound reinforcement, touch screen controls and hearing impaired audio systems similar to the classrooms. DLP projectors and 128.5” projection screens accommodate viewing in the larger rooms. A centrally located equipment room houses equipment racks for the classrooms. These equipment racks contain the on-demand video playback system which can be accessed using the touchscreen controls in each room.

Designed as the “Main Street” of the Modern Wing, Griffin Court flows through ticketing and leads to the galleries; it features multiple dynamic digital signage displays to display museum admission information as well as current and upcoming museum events. Each display consists of a “set-top” box running the digital signage program on a vertically or horizontally oriented 52” LCD display. Griffin Court also features a sound system that is used for special events such as galas and receptions.The Modern Wing’s meeting facility, The Nichols Board of Trustees Suite, occupies the northwest corner of the building’s second floor. The facilities are comprised of a large conference room and a smaller private conference room. The large conference room’s AV systems are designed to be invisible when not in use so as not to detract from the room’s stunning views; the 220” projection screen, front speakers and projector all retract into the ceiling and are concealed by ceiling panels. The projection screen features a motorized screen masking system that accommodates viewing in 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratios. Sound is provided through a distributed system of ceiling speakers as well as the two retractable front speakers. This room is equipped with a hearing impaired audio system which meets ADA requirements. The touch screen system controls all of the AV equipment and allows the operator to control the room’s environment including light level and shade control; a second touchscreen panel plugs into auxiliary floor boxes so the systems can be controlled without being at the podium. The smaller conference room is equipped with a 96” rear projection screen mounted flush with the wall. Sound is provided by distributed ceiling speakers and two front speakers mounted above the screen. A touchscreen control panel gives the user control over all of the system operations. Videoconferencing is accomplished using a portable system that is shared between the two rooms. Both rooms are also equipped with multiple wired microphones and wireless mic systems which accommodate a variety of uses in videoconferencing, meetings & lectures.

The Stone Gallery is designed in a manner that is similar to a small black box theater. A control room houses the gallery’s permanent equipment; amplifiers, DVD/CD Player, AV processing and switching. The gallery also features a full complement of “loose” equipment such as a variety of speakers, DLP projectors with various lenses, and a portable computer interface. This equipment can be configured as needed to meet the arrangement of the gallery. The gallery is designed with 18 connection panels mounted in an evenly spaced distributed grid pattern (9 on the floor & ceiling); this allows the artist’s vision to be achieved without being limited by the placement of the AV components.

Results:

Art is intended to be seen by the human eye and heard by the human ear. In the Art Institute of Chicago a state of the art audio visual system was absolutely necessary to deliver a quality experience to all observers. Background:

Northern Illinois University, established in 1899, is a public research university located in DeKalb, Illinois, United States, with satellite centers in Hoffman Estates, Naperville, Rockford, and Oregon. Within the University is the Duke Ellington Ballroom, well known for being the site of the bandleader’s last full concert before his death in 1974. As a tribute to Duke Ellington’s legacy and his fine performances at the University, the ballroom was renamed in his honor in 1980. The ballroom hosts all types of events from career days and conferences to piano recitals and wedding receptions. As the facility went through an extensive cosmetic renovation, Pentegra Systems partnered with the electrical contractor Kelso-Burnett and the acoustics and AV consulting firm Talaske Group to engineer and implement a versatile audio and video presentation system.

Challenge:

Given an aggressive project schedule, the AV system implementation required accurate procurement and efficient coordination with all of the other on-site trades. Due to the structure and setup of the ballroom, precise alignment of all the screens, lifts and projectors was crucial to the success of the system. Moreover, the system had to effectively accommodate a variety of different events that would be held in the ballroom.

Solution:

Pentegra installed an integrated system that consists of a concert quality sound structure based around the ballroom’s main stage. The entire system incorporates a distributed sound system with high-performance ceiling speakers, three commercial grade video projectors on ceiling lifts with seven different projection screens, expanded jack/plate infrastructure, head-end equipment and a Crestron touchscreen control system. The audio and video systems can be activated and configured for different events using the custom Crestron controls. The sound systems were carefully calibrated using SmaartLIVE software, while the video systems were calibrated by an ISF-certified Pentegra systems engineer using Sencore test equipment.

Results:

Pentegra integrated a versatile AV system that would be reliable for many years to come. Background:

The National Hellenic Museum was the first in the country dedicated to the historical achievements and creations of ancient and modern Greeks. The classical ideals of Hellenism involving humanism, reason, the arts, moderation and civic responsibility were at the core of the design and construction of the 40,000 square-foot building hosting everything from exhibition spaces to meeting areas and a library. RTKL, a renowned architecture, engineering and creative services organization, was commissioned to design the AV, data and security technology in addition to the architectural design of the new facility.

Challenge:

The new facility necessitated leading audio-visual solutions to adequately convey the rich media collections and the extensive archive of oral histories in the collections of the National Hellenic Museum.

The materials selected to incorporate throughout the museum – limestone and glass – created a challenging acoustic environment for employing sound reinforcement systems. Stable system performance relied on calculated placement and adjustment as well as optimization of the audio system digital processors.

Solution:

We worked closely with the technology consultant as well as manufacturers to improve system-wide performance, influencing some of the originally designed components. Background:

Benedictine University was founded originally in Chicago in 1887, though has been situated on its present 108-acre campus in the western suburb of Lisle since 1901. In 2012, The Chronicle of Higher Education ranked Benedictine University as the No.1 fastest-growing campus in the country among private nonprofit research universities between 2000-2010. To meet the demands of a growing student population, the university recognized a need for a new multi-purpose sports complex.

Challenge:

The Village of Lisle Benedictine Sports Complex includes a 3,000 seat lighted stadium with a multi-purpose field for football, soccer and lacrosse, as well as an Olympic-size competition track, a 1,000-seat lighted baseball field, a lighted softball field, concession area, press boxes, meeting rooms and suites. The complex is used by Benedictine University, Benet Academy, Lisle High School and the DuPage Dragons. An effective system required even distribution of sound, while maintaining the integrity of the sound despite various other noises associated with crowds, sporting events, etc.

Solution:

Pentegra Systems designed a system that would evenly distribute sound to all areas of the sports complex. The 3,000-seat stadium uses fifteen weather-treated SX300PI speakers driven by Crown CTS series amplifiers to deliver sound above the crowd noise to the stands and field. EViD series speakers provide sound coverage to the concession & concourse areas as well as the control booth & suites. Sound for the baseball and softball fields is provided by weather-treated SX300PI speakers also driven by Crown CTS series amplifiers. Marantz combination CD/Cassette components play their choice of media and Biamp provides the digital signal processing. The sports complex also uses a variety of wired and wireless Shure microphones.

Results:

Benedictine University has supported its continual growth through the state-of-the-art sports complex, customized by Pentegra Systems to meet every requirement. Background:

Peerless Industries, Inc. is a leading designer, manufacturer and distributor of American-made audio-visual solutions. The company’s innovative product line includes flat panel and projector mounts, wireless technology, motorized mount solutions, cables, kiosks, AV furniture and racks and other accessories. Throughout their 70-year tenure, Peerless has maintained its position at the forefront of the industry, introducing new AV technologies that provide operative solutions to meet the needs of the consumers as well as pro markets.

Challenge:

Prior to 2010, Peerless had been manufacturing audio-visual solutions across several international plants. That year, the company made the strategic decision to move the overseas manufacturing operations back to the US, and subsequently consolidate the US plants into one facility in Aurora, IL. The new facility required a systems integrator to design and install all necessary low-voltage systems. These included structured cabling, access control, CCTV surveillance, voice evacuation, paging, A/V, fire alarm, and intrusion systems. The project necessitated the incorporation of new and advanced technologies with an emphasis on IP network-centric solutions.

Solution:

We redeployed and upgraded the former facilities’ A/V systems in the new conference and training rooms. The systems consisted of a combination of projectors and flat-panel displays with multiple input panels. To overcome the ambient noise generated by the metal stamping machines on the manufacturing floor, we employed a high concentration of Atlas Sound paging horns to allow for audible paging during machine operation.

Because the new 307,000 square-foot facility hosts both Peerless corporate offices as well as manufacturing operations, access control between the various departments was essential to the success of the project. We selected the S2 Security NetBox IP-based security management technology, which can be operated entirely from a web browser. The technology fluently integrates access control, alarm monitoring and video surveillance capabilities in an IP-based, network-ready system. Additionally, the size of the facility, coupled with the need for network reliability, required a purpose-built IP network. To address this condition, we implemented a fiber optic infrastructure with a star topology to eliminate any single point of failure in the IP network.

Lastly, optimal security was achieved through the installation of network surveillance cameras and an intrusion detection system that integrates with the access control system, providing flexibility to maintain both a secure facility and a 24-hour operation.

Results:

Pentegra successfully designed and installed a system with the flexibility, reliability and efficiency to accommodate the diverse requirements and demands of the project, allowing for a seamless transition of the Peerless warehouses and offices.
